Resin beads inside the softener trap the calcium and magnesium and exchange them for sodium or potassium. Using a salt free water softener it naturally removes the hardness without adding any salt or harmful chemicals back into the water. Water softening is usually achieved using lime softening or ion exchange resins but is increasingly being accomplished using nanofiltration or reverse osmosis mem. If you have high blood pressure or are at risk you may be concerned about the sodium in your drinking water.
Soft water also extends the lifetime of plumbing by reducing or eliminating scale build up in pipes and fittings.
